Another difference between a Feature-length film and a short film, is feature lengthed films contain a mass audience. Compared to a short film who have a niche audience, which in some ways can effect the profit made of off both films. Feature length films also include star performers, compared to short film actors who are up and coming in the buisness.
A short film is a film that is predominantly 5-10 minutes long. A short film is equivalent of a poem or short story.
The expectations that I have for a text that is considered to be a 'Short Film' is that a good short film represents a refinement of ideas and the distilled essences of their creators' imaginations.
Short films can be viewed in some cinema's (normally showcased between a certain time). Short films can also be viewed on Youube, illegal/legal downloading torrent sites.
There are different types of media texts that could be considered as a 'Short Film'. For example a cartoon could be considered to be a short film as it normally lasts between 5-10 minutes just like a short film. Also, cartoon can offer insights into stories, and are able to draw the audience in very quickly.
Ways in which short films differ to feature-length films apart from their length is the budget. Feature length films can recieve a budget from hundred of thousands of pounds/dollars even to millions of pounds/dollars. Feature length films are also widley distributed compared to a short film, which are rarely screened (the short film may only be showcased at a certain time,i.e. 10.00-13.00).
There are a range of different people who create short films. For example, some students may create a short film for their coursework. Artists in th music industry create short films in a way to display their music (music video). In the music industry, short films are becomng increasingly popular. Michael Jackson's song Thriller was the first video to qualify for an Acadamy Award as a short subject. Film cmpanies are also creating short fims as another way to promote their films. The trailes are no lasting from 03.30-07.00 minutes.
Through researching Short Films and how they all displayed differently has enabled us to use a different range of formats for our short film. Also we are aware of time and budget used within a short film. (Renae West)
